Session 4: The Mental Health Inequity Experiences of LGBTQIA+ Community in Tennessee
This session will discuss: 1) the failure of laws/policies to recognize certain classes of people –trans folks are not a protected class; 2) non-existent comprehensive sexual education and preventative medicine – more of this population are subject to STDs/STIs; 3) this population is more likely to become homeless and use/abuse substances; 4) purposeful or accidental discrimination – lack of education on how to treat particular issues; 5) the stigma of certain types of relationships/behaviors – understanding personal biases and how this impacts our work; and 6) how the law actively works against LGBTQIA+.

About Crystal Hammar
Crystal Hammar is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Chattanooga Tennessee. She has worked in numerous settings including being the former Director of Clinical and Wellness Services at Partnership for Families, Children, and Adults. She currently owns her own practice working primarily with LGBTQIA+ individuals and families, folks participating in ethical non-monogamy and kink lifestyle, and people recovering from religious trauma. She is also adjunct faculty at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and serves as President-elect of the Lookout Counseling Association.
