Everything Tennesseans should know!
The Federal “No Surprises Act” went into effect in January, 2022, offering consumers protection from surprise medical bills. Prior to its passage, one in five Tennesseans received Surprise Medical Bills. This occured when an insured patient received medical care at an in-network facility, but then received a separate bill from a provider at that facility who is out of network. The patient was then stuck with a huge out-of-network bill.
The No Surprises Act will protect consumers from surprise medical bills by requiring private health plans to cover these out-of-network claims and apply in-network cost sharing and by prohibiting doctors, hospitals, and other covered providers from billing patients more than in-network cost sharing amount for surprise medical bills.
